The Trenton Museum Society Presents
A private evening for members and their guests
Thursday, February 16, 2017
5:30 – 7:30 pm
Special Guest Speaker: Ru Amagasu
Grandson of the world famous master woodworker George Nakashima, Ru Amagasu will speak to members and their guests about the Nakashima Tradition in furniture design.
George Katsutoshi Nakashima was an American woodworker, architect, and furniture maker with a studio workshop in New Hope, PA. He was one of the leading innovators of 20th century furniture design and a father of the American craft movement.
According to Amagasu, “My work is my way of keeping my Grandfather alive in me. He and I were very close and from a young age, I knew my life’s calling. Although most of my work has been custom commission work, I have private and commercial installations in Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Germany, and in fine residences and businesses around the United States.
I have been developing lovely little keepsakes and am very fond of storage pieces (cabinets, open shelving, silverware caddies) and lighting. While I have a number of commissions pending, I hope to have time to work on these smaller pieces in my new shop in New Hope this coming Spring for presentation at select retailers. I would be thrilled to talk to you about items big and small.”
Work by both Amagasu and Nakashima are on display as part of the exhibit, Please Be Seated.
