Aqueous mediums like watercolor evoke a dreamy quality of quickly captured memories and impressions. The works in SPLASH! are no exception. Twenty-five artists bring unique vision and technique to a variety of subject matter. Robert Sakson, watercolorist, teacher and Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society served as juror.

The show’s intent is to illustrate the variety of approaches used in watercolor. Highlights include a collaged watercolor with fractured birds, branches and abstract elements by Judith Hummer, a carefully rendered fence post in Making Do by Beth Schoenleber, and effective use of medium in Flats 1¢ by Thomas Finley. In a tip of the hat to painter Wayne Thiebaud, Susan Philips captures rows of pastries and sweet treats in luscious detail. Scenes from everyday life in A Caribe Market are depicted by Alison Singer, a nostalgic look at India by Medha Atre-Kulkarni, and a charming image of children fishing in a stream by Betty Timmermeyer. In a palette of soft colors, Richard Hoffman contributes a portrait of a demolished home.

Traditional subject matter is also featured. An excellent example is a detailed portrait of a young girl by Paulette Hill while Sheila Redford portrays a woman, GLADYS, in a dramatic profile with painted collaged elements. Flowers are featured singly—a paperwhite by Carrie Bouton– and Japanese irises by Pat Morgan and in bouquets—an abstracted version contributed by Barbara Marsh. Pastoral landscapes by Annemiek Haralson and a mountain stream by Lynn Cheng Vargas provide the viewer with contrasting styles. Deirdre Kennedy uses sumi ink and watercolor for her landscape of the mountains.
