Lyrical Poetry in the Park

Performances by The Unknown Poet and D.J. Haslett
Afro-Cuban rhythms provided by Machuco's Trabuco
November 20, 2009
7:30 p.m.

Enjoy Ellarslie's first spoken word performance. "Spoken word" describes a new genre of performing arts born out of the rise of Hip-hop music and describes art not encompassed by music, theater and dance. Spoken Word is typically the performance of unpublished poetry, often embodying social consciousness.

The Unknown Poet, otherwise known as TuP, is a master artist in spoken word. Over the last 15 years, TuP has built a reputation as one of the premier spoken word artists and lyrical hook masters of the poetry scene on the east coast through his live performances, CDs, radio and television appearances. Though he has been writing for over 20 years, in the last few years he has emerged with a style and delivery that is entertaining and engaging. His performance is described as the perfect combination of rhythm & blues and jazz with thought provoking intellect all wrapped up in spoken word.

D.J. Haslett performing at the Poetry Slam, Full Moon Café in Lambertville.
Having worked for many years in insurance sales and commercial broadcasting, in 1999 at the age of 49, Haslett discovered poetry after picking up a textbook belonging to his daughter, then a student at The College of New Jersey. Since then Haslett has gone on to become a published award-winning poet/writer, artist, photographer and musician. He currently serves as the second vice president of the New Jersey Poetry Society. Haslett's poems and stories have been published in a number of anthologies and he has read his poetry at Grounds For Sculpture, Beaver Pond Poetry Forum, Barnes and Noble, Urban Word Café, and the Princeton University Book Store. He received a Silver Medal as a finalist in the 2000 World Poetry Slam in which 1500 poets competed. Haslett has given workshops to share his love of poetry with high school students, encouraging them to explore their artistic expression through poetry. He also hosts the bi-annual Poets Invitational at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton.
